I think they've already done a clean room implementation of the JVM. Don't know about JNI or anything like that, though. Also don't know if it will help, or if they'll be allowed to put it out. Sun owns the Java "brand," it might be the equivalent of you writing a Windows 95 clone (allowed) and calling it Windows 95 (not allowed).
