Tim A, all, here is a compilation so far. Thanks to all. Suspect we have barely scratched the surface of potential apps.[note: I have left the part represented by my original post unformated so that the rest of your ideas come out readable.]-Jim

All... I have started a list of potential wireless data applications
beyond those that wK will focus on. As you can see, thinking outside
of the box is not my forte. Come on all you dreamers, pitch in a
couple of far out ideas.

Application Comment
----------------------------- -------------------------------------
meter readers (gas, elec, water) No more strangers prowling your yard
child locator/listener sewn into clothing(later subcutaneous)
Sports Bettor's Bible(TM) Retrieve stats,place bets,get scores
Commuter's Toll-Mate(TM) clip to sunvisor, pay tolls on the fly
Traffic-Mate report jammed route ahead, alt. route
Remote Auto Mechanic report car syst. status to you/dealer
Garden/Lawn Moist-O-Meter tells when time to water,autosprinkle

From Tim A:
Students laptops download teachers electronic chalkboard notes.
As teacher types or
draws w/pen stylus on laptop, it appears on chalkboard and into student's laptop, if
desired.

Display indicates where your spouse/child/friend is in the mall/park/wherever.

Patients pass medical info (pacemaker data, etc.) to doctors via kiosks in malls, via
wireless phone, ... .

Livestock inventory/location for ranchers in the field at touch of a button.

E-mail/pages received by wristwatch.

From DaveMG:
Slope by slope ski conditions updated in real time!

From JGoren:
Commuter tolls on the fly already exist. We've had them in Dallas for about 4 years.

forgot: home and commercial security alarm monitoring systems, controlling the timing
lights are turned on and off (our local electric company is working on that one, don't
know if cdma in play there). I really like the meter monitoring idea. Eventually, the whole
building gets wired in to the roof and a single system can tranmit and receive control and
monitoring signals.

From Taichi:
vending machines............... POS info: re: inventory.................

From Harvey Rosencrantz:

Rental car companies near the Mexican border have had a problem with cars being
rented and then driven across the border and sold. The renter then reports the car
stolen. Alternatively, the cars may indeed be stolen first, then driven across the border.
There is a device which is combined with GPS to detect the car's location. If it gets too
close to the border, the engine is killed and a call goes out to the rental car company to
dispatch someone to pick up the vehicle.

I would put that device on every teenager's car, allowing parents to preprogram
accepted travel zones and time of return.

From Jim (J.B.C.):
Add to it posted speeds vs. actual car speed and parents of teenagers would buy them
like hotcakes!

From Jeff Vayda:
IMO combining Omnitracs and G* would provide a value added service here.
Install a receiver and develop some software. If your car is ever stolen, just call your car
and turn it off. Add in some GPS stuff and tell the police were you are going to turn the
car off so they can be there to give the bums a ride back to the station!

All the pieces are there, just need someone to put them together and market the bundle
