Somehow I knew you'd ask that....

I don't know the answer, obviously the money has to come from somewhere but I have not yet learned enough about it to give a sensible answer to that. As more of the small guys try this I may be able to get a better feel for the dynamics.

One possible answer is that is money CPQ was already losing with the big channel partners, so why not also give it to the little guys to penetrate the white box space? But that's just a guess.

Apratim, there was an excellent editorial in today's Wall Street Journal about how MSFT is getting the shaft. It cited Apple, America Online, and Intel as being, basically, crybabies. The author provided examples of how each company profited immensely from their recent relationships with MSFT.

Apple: $250M non-voting, non dividend paying investment from MSFT and a commitment to provide MSOffice for Mac which he credited with making APPL's rebound possible.

AOL: Gets MSFT's IE 4.0 as its default browser for free, gets deal from MSFT for AOL to appear on the desktop, and gets major advertising dollars from MSFT.

INTC: MSFT scuttles INTC's NSP software, but delivers software that makes INTC's powerful chips practical to buy when no other developer is able to do so on such a scale. Without MSFT, INTC's would have been too powerful for use with most software apps.

I think the whole thing's a farce. McNealy is such a whiner. You can't always win.
