Sun - OT,
A colleague had just come from a company which designed and marketed a mouse that worked by movement against a gyroscope (optical? , mechanical?). Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the company or if they did anything other than 2D. Adding another degree of freedom (or more) shouldn't be too hard, I wouldn't think.

Probably a web search keying on "mouse", "inertial", "gyroscope" would pick up something.
