You bring up some good strategic issues. Some comments:

<<The telcos with their regulated monopoly thought processes view DSL as harmfull to their high margin T1 lines.>>

Only for businesses. Residences, ADSL's primary market, do not use T1 lines.

<<Fortunately for all of us, if the PC makers start shipping PCs with DSL modems>>

The PC modems will all work under different standards, since there is no uniformity of service.

<<the consumers will start complaining to their respective Public Utility Commissions (PSC) about their telco not providing DSL service. Enough complaints and the PSCs will mandate a rate cut because the telco is not providing advanced services.>>

We can only hope!

First Alternative to Local Phone Service in a Century..........

GIEX to Start New Telephone Company in Eastern N.C.

-------------------snip-----------------------

''We'll also take full advantage of the synergies generated by growing CoastalNet and Crescent together,'' he said. ''For example, as we upgrade our network to support local voice services, our ISP customers will benefit from utility-quality service with higher access speeds and reliable connections. And the CoastalNet retail stores we already operate in Morehead City, Jacksonville, New Bern, Washington, Rocky Mount and Greenville will offer telephony products and services to Crescent Telephone customers. This synergy will be highlighted by new offerings of xDSL products and affordable high- speed data services that will 'leap-frog' incumbent telephone company data offerings.

---------------------snip------------------------

Our residential and business customers' installation and equipment costs for these new services will be considerably lower than traditional ISDN and dedicated high-speed services presently available in our service area.''
