To: Frank C. and Denver Techie:

I could not get an answer to this question on the Nortel thread so I want your technical advice.

Ken

What is the difference between a chassis based Layer-3 switch and a fixed configuration Layer-3
switch? Is the Accelar (Bay) a fixed configuration switch or a chassis based switch? I notice that
Cabletron claims a 33% market share for its smart switch router which they describe as a chassis
based layer-3 switch. I would appreciate a clarification of this issue.

Ken

Portland Tells AT&T/TCI To Offer Access to Cable Modem Platform

Posted November 18, 1998 06:00 PM PST

The following information has been excerpted from the November 18, 1998 edition of TR Daily.

The local Mount Hood Cable Regulatory Commission has recommended that Tele-Communications, Inc., be allowed to transfer control to AT&T Corp. of two cable TV franchises in the Portland, Ore., area. But that recommendation came with a condition that AT&T and TCI, which announced plans earlier this year to merge (TR, June 24), won't like. The commission said they will have to let other companies use their cable modem platform to provide high-speed data and Internet services.
