Mary, we were talking early this year about when the mainframe might go the way of the dodo bird or the dynosaur. The scenario is that Intel based machines, as they grow through Xeon based and up to Merced class and beyond, will just overthrow the unpopular iron from Big Blue and a few others. Well, it's not quite time, according to the article below. Still, a lucrative market sits there: a thousand machines at $2.5 Million each, or $2.5 Billion since August, and still ramping up. And that's just IBM. Not sure if we had a bet about the demise of 390, but it was probably for a checkpoint of yr 2000 (or was it 1999 <g>).
