On the word "grub" & the appopriateness of its use to describe the practice of posting for trivial message numbes.

Although I realize that you posted that query only in order to "grub" yet another trivial message number for your trophy case, I will take a stab at answering it.

First, let me suggest that this practice is peculiar to SI. I have not seen any other site where messages are numbered in similar fashion. So somebody here coined it, clearly, by analogy with something else.

Now, to:

Standard Dictionary Meaning of Verb "To Grub"

1 : to clear by digging up roots and stumps
2 : to dig up by or as if by the roots
intransitive senses
1 a : to dig in the ground especially for something that is difficult to find or extract b : to search about <grubbed in the
countryside for food -- Lamp>
2 : TOIL, DRUDGE <folks who grub for money -- James Street

I suspect that "post-grubbing" combines both the transitive and intransitive meanings of the word, and that "money-grubbing" is the obvious analogy we are looking for.

However, I must confess I am puzzled. I can see grubbing for money. But why grub for posts?? They aren't even collectibles that you can sell (e.g., old bottle-tops).
