<<<please explain why in the world anyone would amzn rather than a bot,>>>

Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

AMZN has mind-share. Many people start there and never get any further. People trust them. Also its partly the same reason AOL persists--many people do not outgrow it. You and I outgrew AOL. Millions don't. Your idea is logical, but I have difficulty reconciling it with AZMN's "instant market domination" in the music CD-ROM sector. When AMZN gets to $2 to $4B in annual sales (year 2000) their economies of scale will make it difficult for all but a few to compete with them.

<<<or a store with better selection and cheaper prices>>>

I dont think there are any, if you are talking about land-based stores.

<<<or one with real world locations so a gift recipient or even you could return or exchange the item if it wasn't to your liking>>>

Thats about time constraints, and the convenience of shopping in your bedroom, or wherever your PC is, whenever.

<<<Or maybe trying to make yourself feel superior to others>>>

I hope you have read enough of my posts to conclude that they usually lack arrogance. That was the most assertive post I have done, in my memory. I am trying to rattle come cages. I would estimate that the majority of the posts on this thread are factually inaccurate. Just because a bunch of people on a thread agree about something--that does not make them right. If you get a few minutes sometime, go back about six months and read 20 or 30 posts on this thread. They seem pathetic now. Notice the combination of arrogance and ignorance in the postings. Is this the best we can do here??

<<<Total Return Swaps and an array of other garden variety derivatives perform precisely the same economic function -- these people are not idiots. Any insider with enough shares to make the transaction costs worthwhile, would be insane not to do so.>>>

Any evidence that this is happening?

I don't know, but I also suspect that we are only getting a glimpse of what AMZN will be. Who knows what Kleiner Perkins has up their sleve? Imagine the synergies in their keiretsu. You subscribe to At Home. What if every TV and cable commercial in the future has a feature for instant purchase from AMZN? What does that do to outcomes-based research in the field of advertising? What if AMZN gets a lot of advertising revenue? What if AMZN emails you when your friends have birthdays and anniversaries with lists of their interests in material goods? It is risky to short something when you don't know what it will be in three years. Obviously, I don't know either.

Thanks,
Tom

lp, I just lost a post in response to yours that I spent an hour composing. Just don't have the psychic energy to recreate it. I hope you understand. I appreciate your sincere questions however. Knowing this thread, I sure all these issues will be revisited soon enough!

Regards,

Rob
