Dave, that's an interesting set of solutions in your reply and at the intlellon site. While the link is interesting, and I can see now where this approach would seem encouraging, it does appear that this is an OEM type of solution for equipment designers, and not necessarily something for the typical end user to dabble with without an electrician. If I'm not mistaken, it calls for the implementation of the devices at the power source at the feeder panel... please correct me if I am mistaken about this.

The only exposure I've had in this realm, aside with my brief brush with the M&A compliance officers, was over in ConEd. They were using power line carrier over their high-tension plant to communicate with their substation personnel, and for some load shedding applications, using "order wire" techniques.

Encryption is the first thing that comes to mind for security and privacy, like you say, but as soon as a vendor introduces another level of perceived complexity to the average user, they shoot themselves in the head.
