Hi Frank, right, it wouldn't seem to be something a do-it-yourself'er would want to tackle. I wonder if it would be effective to build a small device about the size of a wall transformer that plugs into a 220 outlet (say, at the range or dryer), and the dryer then plugs into it? You'd think they'd have thought of that, so there must be a reason that won't work.

What are "order wire" techniques?

On the encryption front, did you mean that the end user would perceive the addition of encryption as added complexity they would shy away from? That might be the perception for some, but as we move forward and virtually every connection has some level of encryption, I think most everyone will become "carelessly comfortable" with it. There will always be a few, however, that NEVER trust it because of some totally irrelevant experience they had 20 years ago.
