Actually just went back and read the post on LU. I guess I may have misread the intention. If LU pre-announces, it would indeed cast a cloud over the sector. However, you would have to discern exactly where the shortfall lies. My guess is if this happens (longshot imho), its on the circuit and traditional telco side, not packet/data/photonics. Didn't we go through this last qtr? - and as I remember, the sky did not end up falling.....

I like PMCS too, but they will have competition in several areas in the next few quarters. Level one and Dallas have aggressive Digital/Analog T1/E1 combos coming out. Transwitch has a solid ATM portfolio and many '98 design wins. So there are plenty of battles to fight going forward.

>> In addition, LU is NOT in the merchant business.

For chips? Maybe yesterday but not tomorrow. LU wants everything in the equipment business that can generate good margin. Check out the ADSL world: Utopia, Wildwire, etc. all Lucent. Even CPQ went for that sol'n in the ADSL modem. Going forward you must keep an eye on LU, just like INTC and MSFT in the PC biz. As an example, what happened to high flying Cirrus in PC world. INTC eliminated their need.
