<<you mean a short beam between two narrowly spaced poles on each end>> The length of the beam depends on the length of the room without the ceiling joists. The beam runs length wise under the ridge pole. I'm not sure what you mean by "narrowly" spaced poles. The job I am doing is a two car garage being turned into a living space. It will have an open ceiling. No ceiling joists.Roof rafters will be covered with drywall and the beam will be exposed. It is about 19 feet long equal to the entire length of the building. The beam is a 6x10. I will bury a 4x6 post in each 2x4 gable wall thus supporting the ends of the beam. Concrete pads have been poured underneath where the posts will sit.The beam will actually be carrying the ridge pole and in effect the rafters[or roof joists as you call them].The tricky part will be to support the walls before the ceiling joists are removed and at the same time keeping the supports out of the way of raising the beam. I'll probably raise the beam on jacks up to the bottom of the cj then put diagonal 2x4s from opposing 2x4s in the side walls at the top plates to the mud sills crossing them below the raised beam.[Thus temporarily bracing the walls in this manner so as to keep the roof from falling on my head before I can get the beam in place ]. Then remove the cj and raise the beam up to the bottom of the ridge pole and post it there. I don't know if I have made myself clear. Different parts of the country use different terms for the same things.
