There is room in the market for both Full rate ADSL and G.Lite ADSL, same holds true for Satellite, Cable and xDSL. I believe cable has the early lead, but G.Lite will catch up very fast. Also some form of wireless will become a major player as time goes by...there is a demand to free ourselves from the constraints of a hard wired connection.

There is a huge amount of copper lines in places with existing connections, the cost to upgrade that to DSL is the cheapest for the most customers...IMO.

When cable started to be used for Internet connections and xDSL was still being stone walled by the Telcos, I looked for which one would be the winner. I've since come to understand that they both will win to some degree...and successful investments can be made in both.

Nortel Networks and Efficient Networks Sign Agreement to Offer Compatible DSL Equipment Solutions
Nortel Networks to Distribute Efficient's SpeedStream DSL Modems as a Complement to Universal Edge 9000 Integrated, Multi-Service DSL Platform
DALLAS and RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) and Efficient Networks, Inc. announced today an agreement to offer interoperable ATM/Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) equipment solutions to DSL data service providers. As part of the agreement, Nortel Networks will offer Efficient Networks' SpeedStream family of DMT-based, DSL customer premises equipment (CPE) as a compatible complement to Nortel Networks' new Universal Edge 9000 multi-service DSL platform. The combination of these products provides service providers with an ATM/DSL end-to-end architecture for supporting seamless connectivity from the subscriber through the central office to the service provider.

Announced in June at Supercomm, the Universal Edge 9000 is Nortel Networks' global high-speed access platform for the 21st century. This integrated, multi-service platform furthers Nortel Networks commitment to provide evolutionary ''plug and play'' products that offer new high-speed data services without wholesale network changes, remain compatible with existing dial-tone networks, and use existing transport infrastructures.

Nortel Networks will distribute Efficient Networks' SpeedStream 3020 and 5010 DMT ADSL modems to service providers requiring standards-based CPE optimized for end-to-end interoperability and simple high-speed network attachment. The SpeedStream DSL products are capable of being converted to the forthcoming G.Lite standard through firmware downloads. Both companies' products utilize Analog Device's Discrete Multi-tone (DMT) ADSL chipset as the core signal processing engine.

''Efficient Networks is focused on providing multi-vendor interoperable ATM/ADSL modems and addressing concerns about reliability and 'configuration-free' deployment at the customer premises,'' said Greg Langdon, vice president of marketing at Efficient Networks. ''Nortel Networks is a leader in xDSL technology, and Efficient Networks is pleased to be working closely with Nortel in offering our end-to-end xDSL equipment solution.''

Efficient's SpeedStream cell-based DSL CPE products are designed for network service providers to enable deployment of a new class of remote access applications, including high performance Internet access, image distribution, video conferencing and other multimedia applications. Efficient has leveraged its existing, proven ATM technology to provide a high degree of integration and interoperability for its DSL CPE products. SpeedStream DSL products are differentiated through the use of industry-tested silicon and software technology, with an emphasis on simple installation and configuration to minimize management and support costs.

The versatile Universal Edge 9000 from Nortel Networks seamlessly integrates into central office and remote environments for DMS switching and AccessNode platforms. It can also be used for applications where data-only services are needed and is the optimal vehicle for delivering high-speed data services such as videoconferencing, virtual private networking, high-speed Internet access, and transparent LAN services.

The Universal Edge 9000 is scheduled to be available in 1999. It will help accelerate service deployment at the network's edge and ease transition in the local services marketplace by providing new levels of data and voice integration.

Efficient Networks, Inc. is a premier supplier of ATM over DSL customer premises equipment (CPE) to the worldwide data and telecommunications markets. The company's SpeedStream product line includes a broad range of internal and external modems all designed for simple installation. As a recognized leader in ATM technology, Efficient Networks is a member of the ATM Forum, the ADSL Forum and the Universal ADSL Working Group. With headquarters in Dallas, Texas, Efficient Networks also has offices in Amsterdam, Chicago, Walnut Creek, Calif. and Arlington, Virginia.
