John, wow - the SOX on steroids! Your approach contradicts everything
I've learned about stock analysis - but has much merit.

I don't know as I'd agree that following AMAT fundamentals is a mug's game, and I'm not sure there are many people who'd be surprised that it serves as a proxy for the sector. GE is a proxy for the entire country so I guess you can't go wrong if you do your due dilly on either the company or the country? Whatever...something like that....

So for anyone wondering whether to buy or sell AMAT, the thing to do is to ignore anything relevant to the company. There's no point in reading company news releases or SEC filings, listening to company conference calls, reading the zillions of posts in the AMAT thread, or any of that. The stock is just the SOX, and nothing else.

Now tell me why this surprises you?

It's about as shocking as saying retail sales correlate with income or swimsuit sales track the weather. You must have a low tolerance for surprise.<g>

John, thank you for the observation! In that regard, I've found Harley-Davidson [ticker HDI] to be a proxy for the DJIA. Harley and the DJIA track closely together.

Many stocks follow close to the average.
