My understanding is that Iraq had a higher standard of living than any other Arab county before the war. The articles (both by the same author) that George & I cited do provide one concrete statistic, to wit: "The per capita income of Iraq has gone from $2,900 a year to $60 a year." (Do not know whether that number was adjusted for inflation.)

As to the matter of air strikes: I oppose the "lone cowboy" approach in general, and with regard to Iraq in particular.

Bush should have taken out Saddam when he had the opportunity. If Saddam was a "Hitler", as Bush maintained, then there was no excuse for leaving him in power. Now we're stuck with Saddam, and there is no way to put together another Gulf War-type coalition. Phooey. No exit. No nothing.
