Valueman, re Isn't it odd that they [North Amer. GSM Alliance] are speaking out for multiple standards and competition?

Not at all. They are the ones who stand to lose the most from a converged VW-40/cdma2000. Their direct competition, the N.A cdmaOne operators, would get a smooth, low cost path to 3G, while the GSM crowd has to make major investments in infrastructure. I suspect what they really wish for is that 3G would just go away for 4 or 5 years while they develop the revenue base to pay for their existing equipment. Of course, they cannot afford to do this in the face of IS-95 -B/C/HDR/cdma2000, so the best they can hope for is to not give the competition any more advantage than they already have.
