Boy! Did I call that fall or what? (Maybe I ought to run a newsletter <hee hee>).

I don't know these days, but most local ISPs can give you a quote on getting you a domain (how.bout TakeAim.com?>. They charge something like $50 to do the work, then set up an account for you that will cost anywhere from $19 to more than $50/month for commercial activity, less, perhaps, for noncommercial. But, I'd like to see you selling hats off the web, so you might as well go commercial.

Cheers, Jack

Domain registration costs about $100 + whatever your ISP nicks you for helping. They'll also probably require you to go to a commercial account which, if you haven't already done that, will provide more server space and more income for your ISP. The first registration of the domain name is for 2 years, then there's an annual fee of $50.

You can check the availability of a domain name by going to internic.com. You can also register there for a fee and pay to use their server ID until you can transfer the domain name to your ISP. There's a charge for all these services + transfers, so it's best to have your ducks in a row first and work it out with your ISP.

Also, I can connect you with someone that can provide server space at very reasonable prices. They don't support e-Mail, so you'd have to maintain an e-Mail account at your ISP and let these people host your site. There's a way to apply the domain name to your e-Mail address even though it goes to a different location (they're separate functions). If you have an interest, let me know and I'll get you in touch with the provider and let her tell you what it's all about. I have no idea about cost, but I know that the saving is substantial.

Bruce

Tom,

Domain registration is a fixed price $75 for 2 years. My webhost cost $20/month and that does not include electronic commerce. For that you get 60Mb of webspace and 2Gb of traffic. Very easy to set up. If you need some help let me know. I have two sites at HostPro now and they provide site management software so you don't have to learn unix to be able to maintain your site. They have a 30 day money back offer and if you pay for an entire year, they give you a price cut.

hostpro.net of click on the Hostpro button at the bottom of my website and get me a free month of hosting. ;-)

The reason I chose this provider was they were reasonably cheap, faster than most of the other cheap ones and they had pop3 e-mail addresses so I didn't have to comingle my business (read hobby) with my personal e-mail.

I did a survey in July for a friend and the results are here.

geocities.com

Hope this helps. ;-)
