Yes, Virginia, There is a DVD Player Under the Tree NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1998--This holiday spending season is apt to find shoppers scurrying to buy the latest and greatest in technology. If your shopping list includes anything in the home-theater market, chances are it will be a shiny new DVD player. Cahners In-Stat Group, a high-technology market research firm, recently completed a study on holiday sales of DVD players. According Cahners In-Stat Group's Multimedia service, shipments of DVD and Divx players will rise dramatically during the fourth quarter of 1998. Cahners In-Stat Group expects 351,000 DVD players to ship this quarter, with 20% of those representing the pay-per-view Divx players. This number represents a 160% increase over the number of players shipped during the fourth quarter last year. The increase in DVD sales is led primarily by falling prices of players, higher quality audio and video output and availability of movie titles. There are now close to 2,000 DVD movie titles in the market, and many local video stores are beginning to rent discs. While there aren't nearly as many Divx movies on the shelves, Circuit City has poured advertising dollars into the market, which should boost both Divx and DVD sales.
