It would be interesting to hear the results of tests with these UPS's. Why not go to the breeaker panel and switch off the circuit breaker with the computer on and see what happens?

I'm running on an APC Back-UPS Pro 420.
Whenever I see the lights flash it kicks-in for a moment and keeps me running. Its supposed to give me about 10min of running time in event of an outage which is enough to let me to finish what I'm doing and close down, or switch to a notebook.
I'm not using the monitoring software though.
It seems to do the trick... now I just wait for the storm to prove otherwise.

Highly recommend smart ups. who will power down your computer if your not home. All the battery life #'s are all overstated by a factor of 2. You will be more likely to get 5 minutes. Pull the plug from the wall and try....

Why aren't you using their software? out of serial ports?
