or what about one of the ways they are dealing with unemployment is by giving fines to companies that have people working overtime. they figure that if there is enough work available for OT, then they should hire another person.

don't get me wrong, i like Paris as well. i especially like those mandatory 5-week vacations.

: )

OT

I am a type A and there nothing to do in Paris except eat drink and
shop!

Mike,

I did not know you are such a rich man. When I was in Paris, I could only afford bread for breakfast because I had no money for the butter and jam which cost extra. Drinking is out of the question along the famous sidewalk cafe. My line of credit does not have a high enough limit. As for shopping, the only shops that will allow me to browse are the ones who mistook me for a wealthy Japanese instead of Chinese.

Finally, I asked one of the waiters if he knew why the French planted so many trees along Champs Elysees. When he said he didn't know, I told him it was because the Germans like to march in the shade.

Anyway, that was the last time I saw Paris.

Ramsey

France OT - My wife tells me there is a history to why France mistrusts the U.S. During WWII the US backed Giraud instead of De Gaulle when De Gaulle was in London trying to get credibility for his Free French. Giraud gained credibility by allegedly escaping from the Germans but he may have been released by them. So DeGaulle spent most of the war in London with the US thinking he was a nobody. Churchill tolerated DeGaulle much more than the US. Guess what happens then when France emerges from the War with DeGaulle as President? He spends a lot of time trying to establish an independent foreign policy from the US. Tom

Mike

I have been to France on several occasions, and they are definately difficult to figure out...zero entrepeneurial spirit. Actually they have made it illegal to work more than 35 hours in a week. Imagine that.

Last year I was at Serre Chevalier for some skiing, at the village we stayed in, there was maybe 3 small restaurants....thousands of skiers that needed food. Nope, you had to drive 10 miles. When I talked to the French about this, they looked at me like I was crazy.

Good skiing though. Scott

marginmike,

My associate's children are college aged and they tell me how lazy the average French student's are.

There was actually a news earlier this year about French students taking to the streets, and one of their demand was less school work and homework.
