This is just more republican red baiting . . . It is now standard in election mathematics that you try to move your opponent somehow away from center in the public imagination. Normally this involves exaggeration or worse things.

I don't think Hayek was writing for the next election.

As for your argument that some socialists choose to stick with the original label, could it be just another schism among different factions on the left, kind of like the split between the "real" socialists (PSI) and the social democrats (PDSI), or the PCI (now Partito della Sinistra Democratica) and Rifondazione Comunista, in Italy?
