To: keith massey From: etrade (Trial Member) Saturday, Nov 28 1998 2:33AM ET WARNING ABOUT ETRADE Keith, I have lurked on this thread as a non SI member since the start and believe it to be the best one going. It was heartening to see the other complaints about the brokerages, as well as that others were making efforts to have changes made. Like many on the thread I have had huge problems with Scotia and have recently found Etrade far superior. My reason for writing to you is the new Etrade fee schedule (as you posted the Email). I have just been looking around the site and accidently discovered there are many more changes then the flat $27 per 1000 shares. While that does decrease some trades from $38.88 to $27, most trades actually INCREASE, some as much as 200%! The fine print also adds a new $15 surcharge for telephone trades. While they were substantially cheaper and do offer better service then the banks, I find it despicable that they would promote lower commissions and sneak in huge increases. Canaccord will actually be cheaper for many of my trades now! I would appreciate it if you would post a warning to check the new fee schedule as I believe a number of participants are using or considering Etrade and probably large numbers of lurkers. Out of principle for the way this increase has been done I for one will be taking a close look at Priority now. While Etrade executes quicker, those that are switching should pray they never have to deal with a service rep, as I recently did, and spend half an hour arguing over how the Cats system works. The Etrade rep repeatedly insisted that cross trades can be done lower then bids in the market without affecting them (for some reason the Etrade computer cancelled my order but still showed it open). Eventually they gave me my price (and 3 free trades after emailing the boss), but the chance to sell much higher was gone and it was certainly an unpleasant experience. Can none of these places hire staff that have a clue?
