I have found that if you are forced to upgrade a processor, larger hard drive, memory, maybe a better video card, maybe a 56K modem. Then you better off buying a new computer.

I agree.

$200 486 DX UPGRADE - This CAN work, I think...
All I want to do is make it a fast enough dedicated WEB browser for a distant friend to keep up with me via email.

Can anybody add ideas???

THE 486 UPGRADE PLAN:
I am still convinced I can make it twice as fast for under $200. It seems I can do it by installing 2-3 addons cheaply as follows:

INSTALL MORE RAM:
-It has only 12MB in it. (64MB or 128MB ???)

INSTALL CPU UPGRADE:
(info provided by Howard R. Hansen)
- Tiger Direct advertises one assembled by PNY for $89.99. Tiger Direct's part number is P56-2200. Description is PNY QuickChip 133. This will double the speed of your CPU. This item is shown on Tiger Direct's web site. Go to tigerdirect.com and then do a search on CPU upgrade to view the listing for the product.

INSTALL NEW MODEM:
It has an internal 28.8kb modem - this may be fast enough???
Modems are cheap these days, especially used ones.

IT HAS A DIAMOND STEALTH DISPLAY CARD:
It has a 1mb display card, can show 800X600 at 16million, that is more than enough for a dedicated web browser.

IT HAS a 256MB IDE HARD DRIVE
...still big enough to hold Windows 95 and a java-capable Netscape Navigator (NO to IE...) This PC is meant to be just a dedicated web browser, not a graphic station. AND, in time a suitable hard drive will be even more affordable (cheap?).

RESULT is a second WEB BROWSING computer for under $200.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Respectfully,

Donald Berube
