KOREA AIMS TO COMPLETE PROGRAM FOR Y2K PROBLEMS BY YR-END

SEOUL - A government committee said Friday it will aim at completing a
computer program within this year to prevent the "Y2K" computer glitch
from wrecking havoc on the financial sector.

Committee members said the program will be put on a trial run in March
and April to ensure it functions properly. WORLDWIDE SALES OF
CHIPMAKING EQUIPMENT PLUNGE 55.9 PCT

TOKYO - Worldwide sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment
plunged 55.9% from a year earlier to 1.53 billion yen in September, the
fifth straight month to see a decline, according to figures compiled by
the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) and the
Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).

South Korea's industry suffered the largest decline, with 74.1%, while
Japan saw a fall of 60.5%, Taiwan 58.3%, North America 50.7% and Europe
44.2%. Decreases exceeded those posted in August in each of these
regions. FOUR OF FIVE JAPAN CHIPMAKERS POST NET LOSSES IN 1H TO SEPT

TOKYO - Four of five major semiconductor and computer makers posted
consolidated net losses in the fiscal first half ended September, with
Fujitsu Ltd. (TSE:6702) showing a sharp profit decline amid falling
prices of memory chips and personal computer parts, according to
reports released by Thursday.

Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501) recorded a group net loss of 142.2 billion yen
(US$1.166 billion) against a profit of 37.7 billion yen a year earlier,
and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (TSE:6503) posted a loss of 31.8 billion
yen (US$260.8 million), compared with a loss of 26.2 billion yen the
previous year, the companies reported Thursday. FUJITSU WINS TOKYO
EXCHANGE COMPUTER TRADING SYSTEM ORDER

TOKYO - Fujitsu Ltd. (TSE:6702) has received an order to build a
computer trading system for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, company sources
said Thursday. The current system, provided and run by Hitachi Ltd.
(TSE:6501), crashed in August 1997 due to a program error and
interrupted transactions.

The TSE is going ahead with plans to upgrade the system in response to
the Big Bang financial reforms, which are expected to affect trading.
CANON TO SET UP SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE IN INDIA

NEW DELHI - Japanese consumer imaging equipment major Canon Thursday
said it would set up a software development centre in India to provide
business equipment related software technologies for the company
worldwide.

The centre, to be set up in Delhi at a cost of US$1 million, would
design sophisticated software for use in Canon products world over,
Muneo Adachi, director, Canon said here. SUN, LUCENT FOLLOW MICROSOFT
TO INDIA'S HYDERABAD CITY

HYDERABAD - Giving a double blow to India's silicon valley Bangalore,
global computer giants Sun Microsystems and Lucent Technologies are
planning to locate their proposed software development centres at the
newly set up Hitech City here in another southern city, Hyderabad.

"Two teams from Sun Microsystems and one from Lucent Technologies
visited the city this month to explore chances of setting up their
software development centres here," secretary of the Andhra Pradesh
Information technology Department R Chandrasekharan told the Press
Trust of India (PTI) here. MALAYSIAN MINISTER SEES MORE GROWTH FOR IT
SECTOR

KUALA LUMPUR - With economic recovery providing the push, the
information technology industry can expect significant growth potential
and benefits from the nation's and the region's development over the
long term, said the Malaysian Minister of International Trade and
Industry Rafidah Aziz Thursday.

She said at the same time, the information technology (IT) industry
must assume the catalystic role in driving forward the growth and

KUALA LUMPUR - Outsourcing is a relatively new business service for
Asian companies and should be evaluated by every medium to large
business, said Glen Rasmussen, managing director of Rascoe Development
Ltd.

In his paper "Outsourcing in Asia" delivered at the ASOCIO
(Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation) 16th General Assembly
and Symposium in Petaling Jaya Thursday he said outsourcing included
data centre operations, disaster recovery, business continuity, network
management, desktop services, applications development and support, as
well as call centres and help desk operation. MITSUBISHI SOLID STATE UV
LASER BOASTS 20 WATT OUTPUT

TOKYO - Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said it has developed a solid state
ultraviolet laser with a world-class maximum power output of 20 watts.

Developed in cooperation with Osaka University and the optical crystal
specialist KogakuGiken Co., the new UV laser is twice as powerful as
any other solid state UV laser created to date. JAPAN'S ADVANTEST TO
OFFER TESTING SET FOR RAMBUS DRAMS

TOKYO - Advantest Corp. (TSE:6857) will market a complete set of
hardware and software systems in December for testing Direct Rambus
dynamic random-access memory chips (DRAMs) developed by Rambus Inc. of
the U.S., company officials said.

The firm aims to sell 100 sets a year of the Rambus Testing Set, priced
at about 300 million yen.
