WORLDWIDE SALES OF CHIPMAKING EQUIPMENT PLUNGE 55.9 PCT TOKYO - Worldwide sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment plunged 55.9% from a year earlier to 1.53 billion yen in September, the fifth straight month to see a decline, according to figures compiled by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ) and the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). South Korea's industry suffered the largest decline, with 74.1%, while Japan saw a fall of 60.5%, Taiwan 58.3%, North America 50.7% and Europe 44.2%. Decreases exceeded those posted in August in each of these regions. FOUR OF FIVE JAPAN CHIPMAKERS POST NET LOSSES IN 1H TO SEPT TOKYO - Four of five major semiconductor and computer makers posted consolidated net losses in the fiscal first half ended September, with Fujitsu Ltd. (TSE:6702) showing a sharp profit decline amid falling prices of memory chips and personal computer parts, according to reports released by Thursday. Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501) recorded a group net loss of 142.2 billion yen (US$1.166 billion) against a profit of 37.7 billion yen a year earlier, and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (TSE:6503) posted a loss of 31.8 billion yen (US$260.8 million), compared with a loss of 26.2 billion yen the previous year, the companies reported Thursday. FUJITSU WINS TOKYO EXCHANGE COMPUTER TRADING SYSTEM ORDER TOKYO - Fujitsu Ltd. (TSE:6702) has received an order to build a computer trading system for the Tokyo Stock Exchange, company sources said Thursday. The current system, provided and run by Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501), crashed in August 1997 due to a program error and interrupted transactions. The TSE is going ahead with plans to upgrade the system in response to the Big Bang financial reforms, which are expected to affect trading. CANON TO SET UP SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT CENTRE IN INDIA NEW DELHI - Japanese consumer imaging equipment major Canon Thursday said it would set up a software development centre in India to provide business equipment related software technologies for the company worldwide.
