'· 60 Minutes to Air Y2K Segment Sunday, November 29th

Your editor has badgered various members of the 60 Minutes team for
the last several years, to wit Steve Croft at Bill Samuels' wedding,
producer Don Hewitt on two occasions in East Hampton, one in '97 and
one this past summer, and Mike Wallace at a party last spring
introducing Gerry "Adam Smith" Goodman's 13 segment TV show on PBS.
We got more than a bit obnoxious with Wallace and if he recalls the
incident, it will surely not be with favor. Obnoxious at least gets
attention. Gerry was not pleased.

So how will they play it -- seriously, tongue in cheek, or siding with
the Wall Street Journal which believes the problem will be resolved by
the "invisible hand" of classical economics?

· French Finance Minister Strauss-Kahn: Aircraft Worldwide To Be
Grounded January 1, 2000

PARIS, Nov 26 (AFP) - It is "more and more likely" that all aircraft
in the world will be grounded on January 1 2000 out of fear of
possible air chaos caused by the year 2000 computer bug, French
Finance and Economy Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn said Thursday. If
such a decision is made, "it will be a worldwide decision after
coordination with all the civil aviation authorities," French
secretary of state for industry, Christian Pierret, added. While
updating air control computer systems to overcome the bug -- which may
result in older machines mistaking the year 2000 for 1900 -- is being
followed "very closely," malfunctions could still happen, Pierret
warned. The two men were speaking at a press conference on France's
entry into the third millennium.
