Stephen, it appears that sentiment is now rising on the side of taking a breather regarding the timing of VoIP deployments by the majors. On the surface this might look like an opportunity for the startups to extend their lead.

On the other hand, it may be a sign that the startups are simply digging themselves into a deeper hole from which to extricate themselves, if the ultimate set of standards to be agreed upon are drastically different, or syntactically inconsistent with what is being deployed today.

Other dangers have to do with scale of integration, and the price of entry later on down the road, compared to the bleading edge price structures associated with the early-chasm-stage price-points of today. The foregoing statements make it easier to understand why the more conservative players are holding back on announcing any plans, despite the penalties of being branded with the Luddite images that they inspire for themselves. It is, after all, business.
