Dear Dea, the width and depth of your note embarrass me... I do not deserve. A cpla brief returns, though. 1) Ugly is not my view. Fact is. One of the Absurdists started a book with, "Mother died yesterday, or was it the day before? I am not sure." Mother died was a fact. That sweetness is being squeezed out of our successors cannot be viewed with sadness. It simply must be viewed. And, I shout, not out of all. The anecdotes you relate are inspirational - though delusory. 2) This passage of yours: "Here's a silly thing. I was in New York City last year and needed to use a payphone--along with a LOT of people. As one came free, I stepped toward it at the same time as a young man with dread locks, chains, earrings, nosering, and a scary t-shirt. I stopped immediately, thinking, no way was I going to argue with him about who was first. And he turned to me, smiled, and said, 'You go first.'" was a million miles from where I was shooting. That, your experience, has to do with racial relations, or conflicts, or anticipated conflicts. A whole different box of crayons is needed for that one. Eg., I would have anticipated the outcome, but still believe we are in for a major ethnic conflict in not too many decades. (We shit on minorities. As a society, we view our own individualism so pathetically jealously that we keep dashing kerosene on masses of folk we fear. Fear, because we think they are challenging us and ours.) Where I was shooting had to do with our system in general. I am convinced that the social 'graces' are ceding to the genealogical 'graces.' And, thus, we are creating an increasingly more powerful elite - and an increasingly more bitter disenfranchised. The purpose of this note, however, is to express hope that you do not lay all your hopes in the basket of your progeny. That you look at youself and ask the mirror on the wall: Who is the most beautiful in the land? And you hear the mirror reply: penni - without a question. g. ps: This is a stupid, personal, fact: I am quite pleased that I am at the end of my course rather than the beginning - with the gutlessness and folly that is now in the process of 'taking over.'
