sufficiently tech-savvy to be thinking of building a dream machine.

I am not suggesting that you put the thing together yourself. I do believe it is important to research the machine before you buy. This is true even for the boxes from the big boys. (actually putting one together yourself is not as difficult as one might think. It is mostly just plugging things together)

Once you get a feel for the components you need you have a couple of options. If you opt for a machine from DELL, Micron, Gateway, IBM, you will most likely have to make more compromises. In return you get a better overall support package.

If you are not a first time computer buyer the custom machine option can be a good way to go. There are several outfits that will put a machine together for you. They also offer advice so you are not on your own with the decisions. They burn them in before they send them out. You will not get the "free" $1000 ha, worth of software on the custom machines. I consider that an advantage.

With makers like Compaq and IBM you will find that reinstalling the OS will result in a total loss of data. In general many of the big box makers just give you a recovery disc that wipes out everything when you have to use it. This is one of the primary reasons that I will not buy another IBM or Compaq. The units sold to the general public have this software disadvantage IMO.

Clarence has recently done a significant amount of research along this line of thinking. He has contacted several customizers. If you review his recent posts you will learn a lot.

Stick with Wintel and Cream. These decisions are made by others and us peons just have to go along for the ride<g>
