Has anyone heard anything about a HSM software option that supports Ampex libraries?

If I remember correctly, IBM, in the early nineties, spearheaded the development of HPSS (High Performance Storage System) software -- primarily for the supercomputing and large scale computing jetset. I am fairly certain that AXC's DST is supported by this package which is very heavy on HSM. AXC's DST is also the tape drive of choice for the supercomputer centers in the USA and Europe largely due to speed (ATM networks linking supercomputing centers) and capacity (which makes swapping data tapes more manageable). Unfortunately, those academics always manage to find a way to pay less than full price for these machines. <g>

Per Freeman & Associates, the market for $100,000 and above tape drives like DST was only about $50 million in 1997. The forecasted numbers, however, do not quite seem to match what everyone intuitively understands to be the naturally explosive growth in storage requirements that will flow from the increase in bandwidth. Borrowing a quote from one EMASS vice-president, "... the nature of data is changing...."
