Does it take a few years for an asparagus plant to produce? Do the bugs and varmints get at them? Can you grow them in most climates?

I cheat. I buy my asparagus from a local farmer. You can either pick it yourself and purchase it for $0.75 per pound or they will pick it for you for you and then purchase it for $2.00 per pound. I prefer to pick it myself as then I can I can blanch the asparagus and get it in the freezer within two hours of picking the asparagus. This farm is very popular in the spring you need to call a week in advance to make an appointment.

Another option here is to pick asparagus that grows wild along the irrigation ditch banks. I keep looking for a good location to pick wild asparagus but never found a place where I could get more than two servings. Others brag about the amount of wild asparagus they pick. My barber said he went out one morning and picked a half bushel in less than two hours. But he was secretive about the place. He wouldn't give me detailed directions to the location.
