<Oh, and REAL institutions don't dump stock on non-news days without caring what price they get. Good ones fight for every 16th they can get.>

Institutions do some pretty dumb things. Source: 30 years of reading such writers as Alan Abelson and Peter Lynch. The source for my observation that institutions put in general orders to dump a particular holding that is then mindlessly executed by a broker over a period of days or weeks is Lizzard ("Lizzard's Stock Swamp" on SI). This happens not infrequently.

Your qualification regarding "non-news days" is significant. We have all seen institutions dump huge blocks of shares in a fashion that can fairly be described as mindless. Why do you think that underlying stupidity occurs only on "non-news days?"

You further limited your observation to REAL institutions and "Good ones." I don't understand what you mean by a "REAL" institution: we all understood I was referring to financial entities who buy and sell stocks; they either are or they aren't. I would generally agree with a statement that "good" institutions usually don't make mistakes but don't see how that adds to the discussion.

Just because a trade is of less than 5000 shares doesn't prove that it wasn't made by an institution; the latter do try and conceal their identities and their intentions. Of course, it doesn't prove the converse either; I only know the trades I described were mindlessly executed.
