I don't recall a time period in which Christ's ideal "church" ever existed.. that is, after he died."
As found in the bible church members were making errors and committing sins which were challenged by Paul and by the apostles. Even Paul complained about the sin in his life that he wanted to conquor. We as humans and being sinful will make errors and commit sins even after becoming a Christian. If we ever say "I am holier than thou now" pride is the bad fruit we'd be bearing and one lousy testimony to non Christians. The first person to usually recognize hypocrisy in a Christian is a non Christian.
"Tell me what practices the churches should engage in...,"
Mark 16:15
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
James 1:27
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

There is much else that we "the church" aught to be doing which we find out by reading the bible. It is a manual for us and it tells us that "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God."
It's entire theme is very simple, pointing to salvation only by Jesus Christ and the need for us to be obedient to God for our own welfare just as any child needs to be obedient to a loving parent for their own welfare.

TED,

Hope you don't mind me calling you TED as your handle is sort of morbid. The Church has one major mission. That is to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. If God can just get the people to do that then everything else would fall into place. People would be converted and the enemy would be defeated.

Sounds simple but the fact is most would rather adhere to their own agendas.

Chris

Adding to what Chris said as well, the entire verses state in Matthew 22...
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The duty of every Christian, of every denomination without exception.
John
