The greatest example of love that anyone can give is as the bible states Jesus did for you and I...
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

Jesus was either who He said He was or the greatest fraud that ever existed.
He was either who He said He was or a liar or lunatic if He believed His own lie because He died for it.
No persons life has ever so dramatically effected the world as did Jesus Christ's.
We either choose to accept or reject Him with nothing in between.
My choice has been to accept His message and since then He has proven Himself to me innumerable times even where proof was not needed.
I do know where you are coming from in what you perceived in your Catholic background.
By God's grace I learned that if I depend upon an institutions teachings or rely upon a man as my mentor or instructor in faith, that institution or person will fail me.
God's love can penetrate through skepticism and reveal Himself to any individual. I found that He does reveal Himself in His word, the bible, which the church I had attended tried to dissuade me from reading because it exposes many false teachings of man made traditions. I had my fill of hypocrisy, as I believe I can safely assume, you did as well, in the world of what we perceived around us.
The bible teaches Christ and salvation through Him simply and uncomplicated, world religions and denominations complicate that message. He gives freedom from the burden of sin because He loved us first before we ever knew Him.
Will God fault you for not loving that which you do not know?
Only one thing leaves you condemned in God's eyes according to the bible and that is rejecting the absolute free gift of salvation through acceptance of His Son as Saviour. He loved you and me so much that he gave His life for us before we even knew about Him. I could not expect that of anyone I know.
