Hi Taichi,

The same article also states:

"W-CDMA, which stands for wide-band code division multiple access, is
expected to be a unified global standard, the three companies said."

Sounds like the Japanese might be more interested in a uniform Global WCDMA Standard than the Europeans. I believe they do have CDMAOne systems (operational or going to be operational) in Japan.

I would offer a simpler explanation. 3G is coming in one form or another and they all know it. Right now the Japanese are in the W-CDMA camp. They are not ready to give up on W-CDMA but they do see the value in getting something started. All the effort that they put into a teaming arrangement now is independent of the operating system eventually chosen.
