Newbridge Networks to Deliver Turnkey Multi-Services,
Multi-Access Solution for WIND - New Generation Carrier
to Offer Value-Added, Next-Generation Services

KANATA, ONTARIO--Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today
announced it has been awarded a five-year contract to supply a
turnkey solution for WIND, a new Italian telecommunications
consortium consisting of energy distributor ENEL, Deutsche Telekom
and France Telecom. The contract, which is estimated to be valued
at $100 million was won against all major competitors,
demonstrating the strength of Newbridge Networks in delivering
partnership-based, multi-services, multi-access solutions to new
generation carriers.

The global experience of Newbridge in delivering advanced
networking solutions to new generation carriers will enable the
rapid introduction of the new WIND network.

Newbridge will supply a scalable, fully managed, networking
solution providing Wind with a single, multi-services platform on
which to offer X.25, frame relay, asynchronous transfer mode
(ATM), and Internet Protocol (IP) internetworking services.

Newbridge is providing new generation carriers like WIND with a
complete turnkey solution for the provision of fully managed,
scalable services from a unifying, broadband ATM platform,
ensuring a flexible, reliable and scalable network. WIND looks
forward to working with Newbridge to further enhance its service
offerings.

The development of this new network follows fixed voice, data and
DCS 1800/GSM 900 MHz licences awarded to WIND earlier this year.
The initial solution includes 21 points of presence throughout
Italy, comprising the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm)
36170 MultiServices Switch and the 36120 MainStreet(r) Packet
Transfer Exchange frame relay system, which provide high-speed
circuit and packet switching for multiple services over a single
platform. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and Newbridge
Affiliate CrossKeys' Resolve(tm) service management application
software will provide network management and service level
reporting and guarantees through Web-enabled customer service
management.

Newbridge has worked closely with WIND to develop a networking
solution that will enable WIND to deliver a portfolio of
next-generation products and services to its customers. The
flexible, highly scalable solution provided by Newbridge in
combination with skilled, experienced personnel, has resulted in
the creation of an optimal solution for WIND.

"Newbridge and WIND have worked hand-in-glove to develop this
solution," said Gianni Bestetti, General Manager, Newbridge
Networks Italy. "Our ability to offer a total networking solution
was critical. The Newbridge(r) solution will enable WIND to
compete quickly and effectively in the Italian market and provides
a solid platform for growth in terms of the volume and breadth of
services WIND delivers to its customers."

WIND is the new Italian telecommunications company owned by ENEL
(51 percent), Deutsche Telekom (24.5 percent) and France Telecom
(24.5 percent), first and second telecommunications operators in
Europe respectively; with over 650,000 miles of transmission
lines, ENEL is the world's second largest electric utility in
terms of installed power and number of customers. During the first
half-year of 1998, WIND obtained licenses for fixed and mobile
telephony, becoming the first operator to offer the new frontier
of telecommunication services: integrated services of fixed and
mobile telephony. First in Italy, WIND is planning and realizing
such integrated services in order to offer, through common
technological platforms and development, a high number of new
services usable on the two networks, with higher quality and lower
costs.

Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures, markets and services

The Company leverages its relationship with a growing family of
Newbridge Affiliate companies and strategic alliances with Siemens
