Alan Kay was at PARC when the Dynabook idea was first being kicked around, though I imagine it was a collaborative effort. The first relevant web ref Dogpile came up with is this:

Prior to his involvement with a project called Vivarium, as well as work at Atari, Apple and MIT's Media Lab, Kay promoted the notion of a computer small enough to be carried around comfortably--the Dynabook. While at Xerox PARC, Kay envisioned the Dynabook to be powerful enough to do virtually anything the user desired while remaining small enough to be completely portable, as one caries around a book. (http://www.studio-e.com/E-MEDIA/DRAFT/PRO/PRO.Dynabook.htm )

Or maybe it wasn't so collaborative, but I'm sure there was never more than a mockup done at PARC. Kay's at Disney now, I don't know if there were any intermediate stops besides Apple.

Cheers, Dan.
