Chuzzlewit, the alpha and beta are associated with hypothesis testing. If my memory servers me correctly, the alpha is associate with the risk of accepting a hypothesis as true, when in fact, it is false. The beta is just the other way around. (I may have the alpha and beta reversed. Would have to check my old stat book.) One would set a confidence level with the alpha/beta; ie, 0.05 is a common cut-off level.

As far as TA goes, IMO its a great "indicator" of the past. As far as forecasting the future, I sure won't bet the farm on it. I am a firm believer that fundamental analysis is the only way to analyze a company. Looking at the stocks chart is useful in seeing how it performed in the past. As far as forecasting a stock's future performance, I just don't know of a good model that one might use.

PS: I should add that I think the evaluation of the management team is also an important factor in evaluating a company.
