Concerning videophones:
there is a voice on the thread that seems to think videophones are a joke and have no use or future. Step aside.
What is so difficult to understand about remote offices using videophones? I hear chatter that internet based video has made videophones obsolete before they have even begun.....not true!!
Internet video calling means that most users must set up the time for the call in advance, which means you would have to call first on the regular old telephone, kinda ridiculous eh? Most PC based videophones will work only after both users log into special directory servers know as Internet Locator Servers- and the listings on those are mostly sexual in nature....a little daunting for grandma or serious business persons.
When dealing with technophobes, the internet based CU-SeeMe or other software is out of the question- it is too complicated. Videophones on the other hand are incredibly easy to install and operate- plug it in and turn it on- if you can hook up a vcr, you can install a videophone.
Image and voice quality are far superior to anything travelling over the internet as well.
As to cost- you can get a videophone for about a tenth the cost of the computer system needed to use internet video calling. Believe it or not, most people still do not have computers, and many that do are not even hooked up to the net.
I think the idea of remote offices for making mortgages and other business ventures is smart, smart, smart. Imagine the travel time and costs that can be saved by holding video conferences instead of in-person business meetings. You can build your business success with personal service and attention to customers, clients, and colleagues.

Some other uses for videophones:
1) videophones for the deaf!
2) 911 emergency telephone centers (maybe someday when everyone has made the transition to videophones...like the Jetsons...give it time, it will happen)
3) health care (very big! anesth.nch.go.jp )
4) remote college courses
5) home shopping/demonstrations
6) videophones are already in most military bases around the world for morale boosting (service men and women abroad can call home bases that also have them and see/talk with loved ones)

there are plenty of uses, I have hardly hit the tip here, but it should be clear that the world is ready for the videophone, it is only a matter of implementing it. People are attracted to that which is cutting edge. A remote office in a third world country that enables the client to SEE, hear and be seen by the company they wish to do business with will be very impressive- the news of such amazing technology spread by word-of-mouth alone will be priceless. "...you will never believe what I just saw today...and they approved my application so quickly!"
