An interesting snippet from the MSFT trail indicating that MSFT Java is indeed faster than Suns:

'Alarmed' Sun e-mail
Microsoft attorneys homed in on Sun's apparent concern over Microsoft's performance edge in running Java applications vs. their own, "pure" Java. Slides from one internal presentation showed that Sun executives were concerned Netscape "will likely face serious problems attempting to build a robust, 100 percent Pure Java browser." Another e-mail from Chet Silvestri, a senior manager in the company's computer hardware division, showed real concern. Microsoft's Explorer browser with its own Java software "completely blew away every benchmark." "Somebody ought to do something about this NOW," he wrote.
