Have to go out for a while, short post now:

All the "traditional" reasons you cite have been true in the past. I wonder if they're true now. I know that this sounds like "irrational exuberance" but it is reality. When the market acts in an insane manner, only insanity will make money. After all, making money is really what we want.

If intelligence alone would guarantee market riches, John Meriwether and Black and Scholes at LTCM would still be riding high.

It's really anybody's guess. As long as inflation remains low (no deflation), the US does not slide into recession, AG remains accomodative, Bill Clinton wants to get the Democrats into the White House in 2000, and the Plunge Protection Team continues to protect us all from those nasty bears, the market should continue to trend up.
