The WSJ is circulating the rumor of a LU buy-out, but makes it clear that the info is quite weak.

Informix Up 17% Amid Heavy Volume, Buyout Rumors

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Informix Corp. (IFMX) shares shot up for the second consecutive day Thursday, remaining a
popular topic of speculation and debate on Internet message boards.

Shares of Informix closed at 7, up 1 1/32, or 17.3%, on volume of 14.4 million, compared with average daily volume of 2.1
million. On Wednesday, the shares rose 5/8 or 11.7%.

The company and many on Wall Street were unable to offer a concrete reason for the stock's recent movement. But
participants on a Yahoo! Finance message board eagerly offered opinions that ranged from heavy buying by institutional
investors to a buyout by Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU).

Lucent has figured as a potential suitor in a number of rumored buyouts and mergers in the past several months. As of
October, Lucent was freed from accounting restrictions that would have made a large acquisition difficult.

Lucent declined to comment on the speculation regarding Informix.

Informix, which makes database software, would not appear at first glance to be a natural for telephone and networking
equipment maker Lucent.
