In respect to the MM's, I don't feel the price cuts will affect us at all. They have been holding us right where they want us and everything is on track for a gradual increase. In my opinion the MM's are desperate to make their money on Compaq this quarter and a lot will sell and take profit. Like I have said before the Houses have bought up so much of Compaq, I have not seen one that is not pushing it hard. They know Dell will be there and show great earnings, I think Compaq scares the hell out of them.

The king of sub-zero PCs and sub-zero P/E.

stock bull:
The last time I checked CPQ had NO P/E (according to Yahoo) unless one can have a negative P/E (huh?).

BTW I like Alta Vista probably one of the better search engines, anyway all kiddin' aside I hope CPQ also does well, after all it's a Texas company you know,we can't have'em going down the tube on account of a less than capable management.

Come to think of it they are not even a competitor according to MD,DELL just don't follow (or emulate) anybody they just do their 'thang'.<vbg>

Re: CPQ and its earnings

There seems to be some confusion regarding CPQ's earnings or lack of earnings. These are the actual reported numbers:

Rev. Earnings EPS
7323 667 .42
5687 16 .01
5832 -3632 -2.33
8791 115 .07

If CPQ maintains its current earnings rate, it should recoup the cash that it cost to purchase DEC in 31 quarters or about 8 years.

If CPQ could spin off Alta Vista and raise 1B it could shorten the time to recoup its expenses.

As it stands today, CPQ is a poor investment at best and it has a negative PE in real terms.

On the SI Investor profile CPQ's losses have been reduced to footnotes and then operating profits are reported. This gives the false impression that CPQ is doing better than it is actually doing.
From this it is reasonable conclude, that CPQ is making a concerted effort to promote it stock by misleading the naive investors.
