So gee maybe he didn't do it. No one disputes the facts in the case. He accepted gifts from industries his agency regulates. His defense was that he stiffed the gift givers; he took the gifts and didn't do anything for them. This makes him not guilty of an badly written law.

This is an under reported crisis in America - Congress is writing a flood of legislation and most if it is crap. It's so vague the regulators virtually write the law themselves. Or else it's so full of loop holes that ( given a bright enough lawyer ) it's virtually useless.

It also could be jury nullification. The jury didn't want to convict Espey no matter the evidence. He had admitted to soliciting gifts and trips.

melinda,

You say there wasn't enough evidence to
convict Mike Espy?

I used to work for the Federal Government.
During the course of my work I met with
foreign officials, and worked with both
American and Asian businessmen. I was
offered cash, gifts, and even was once
offered a Japanese Call Girl in the course
of my work. I did not accept any gifts
because *IT IS ILLEGAL*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you suggesting that season tickets to
the NBA, scholarships for his girlfriend,
and other gifts worth tens of thousands of
dollars don't constitute gifts or bribes?

Mike Espy got off because they used the
same tactics as the O.J. Simpson defense
team. The race-bait defense of the 90's
is "Don't let Honkey put away another
brother...".

-John

ps It reminds me of a Joke: What is the
difference between the American Criminal
Justice System and O.J. Simpson?

A. O.J. is Free!!!

Do you think Orenthal Simpson killed those two people?
