Dear Bob: That sounds like a fairy tale to me. Does it start out "Once upon a time"? A matter so serious as described would have to be described in the SUNW, AOL, MSFT 10k's as Material Potential Liabilities. Have you seen such description? JDN

If there's any validity to this whole Cringeley premise, which I doubt, there are quite a few lawyers who are unlikely to sit around quietly while Microsoft buys an exclusive license to a patent that "puts Java out of business". We should recall that IBM and plenty of other companies have stakes in Java. Microsoft doesn't have more money than IBM, nor does it have more money than all the other companies interested in Java put together. (Not that a bidding war or anything interesting is ever going to materialize.)

But the main point is, this patent has nothing to do with either the DOJ case or the Sun v. Microsoft case even if it's real. Cringeley, without further elaboration, says Microsoft will file for dismissal of both cases and "it will probably work". No, Bob, these motions would probably be laughed out of court if they were ever filed, which they won't be.

Robert X. Cringely has made up a fantasy world. He should be a novelist. It's pretty unlikely reality will follow his map, or even slightly resemble it.

All I have to say is MS doesn't innovate they just steal or copy the products they want and at the end of the day the product is a piece of crap.
Look how they plan to fragment Java now.

How did Cringely suddenly become aware of this previously unheard-from "Eolas"? Could it be that Microsoft has been whispering into his ear? They're playing the same old game of burying gullible, scoop-hungry technology columnists and broadcast hacks with half-truths and mis-truths, knowing that this crap will be passed on to investors.

Of course, "Eolas" could prove to be the secret weapon that knocks Netscape and Sun out of the water, preserve Microsoft's monopoly over the entire technology industry and eventually the entire world economy, and I will be wrong.
