Distinction Software, Inc. to be Acquired by PeopleSoft
PeopleSoft will deliver extensive new Supply Chain Management functionality in 1999, including the ability to perform the high-volume demand planning activities associated with Consumer Products (CP) companies. PeopleSoft will combine its existing Demand Planning application with software products and technology obtained in the acquisition of Distinction Software, Inc., an Atlanta, Georgia-based Supply Chain Management software company. The combined offering will result in a new version of PeopleSoft Demand Planning and a new module, PeopleSoft Inventory Planning. The initial release of these software products will be shipping in early 1999 to selected customers with an enhanced version designed for higher volumes scheduled to be available in the third quarter.
The extended product offerings contain a number of features designed to meet the needs of high-volume manufacturers, distributors and retailers. The Demand Planning module allows users to create high quality product forecasts based on statistical analysis and collaborative input from multiple users across the enterprise. It includes the following features:
- Events and promotions - Nomadic forecasting capability for field sales collaboration - User defined multi-dimensional forecasting - Seasonality profiles - Advanced statistical and causal models - Automated forecast development and cycling - Integrated workflow and management by exception - OLAP interface for multidimensional analysis
The new PeopleSoft Inventory Planning module will enable users to plan optimal inventory levels across the enterprise. Using an intuitive workbench, users will be able to quickly analyze scenarios such as determining how lowered inventory levels might impact customer order fill rates. Some of the features of PeopleSoft Inventory Planning include:
- Calculates time phased inventory policy by SKU - Supports a range of safety stock and replenishment order
calculations including days of supply policy to deal with major
shifts in demand - Supports side by side comparison of multiple inventory policies - Highlights impact on service levels, carrying costs, inventory
turns and average investment for user selected inventory policies

PeopleSoft has executed a definitive agreement to acquire all outstanding equity interest of Distinction Software, Inc. PeopleSoft will issue between $5 million and $10 million worth of stock and options for all of the outstanding equity interests of Distinction in a transaction that is expected to close in the second half of 1999. Prior to closing the transaction, PeopleSoft and Distinction will operate independently within a development, marketing, sales and support relationship that will streamline the eventual merging of the two companies.
