I am not arguing Michelle. Teachers deserve a professional wage. There are a couple of problems with asking the public to anti up though.

The number one problem is teacher preparation programs. Most people can slip through the teacher education programs without much rigor and with no more teaching ability at the end than you have without attending. Lots of people pick a teacher education program after completing a BS in literature or some equally un-marketable degree program. They didn't go into teaching because of the challenge or their ideals, they took it because it was an easy path with great benefits. Four months plus of paid time off, for example.

The number two problem is we want to know we are going to get something for our investment. Yelling louder at a person who is deaf does as much good as throwing more money at programs that aren't willing to address and raise academic standards. The dough would most be thrown at social bandaid programs. Public education is one of the oldest and largest institutions in the country. It doesn't change easy.

The number three problem is that our culture no longer values involvement in education. Parents aren't typically involved for example. How much do the organizations pay the trainers from the human resources department in the organizations you work for? Probably about 1/2 of the wages of the technical people they are training.

Japan pays them more than here. In Japan, the schools are more comparable to the private schools here in the manner that they are run. There's too much overhead here.
