I got a callback from the ISP's DSL salesperson who
impressed me with how familiar she was with the two
local carrier's DSL offerings and the details of their
signup and install procedures ... down to the number
of days it takes the two carriers to provision the
lines after installation ... how to tweak them to do
a fast loop qual ... etc, etc.

May be old hat for ya'll, but it was a serious data
point for me ...

I'll probably take the GTE DSL Gold service ... $80/mo
for 768k/768k if I can get it. GTE is running a promo
with a big savings on the fixed costs:

Promo Price
-----------
$99 one-time charge
Includes purchase of modem, service connection, modem installation, and inside wiring.

Only available on 1-Year or 3-Year service contracts.

Original Prices
---------------
Modem purchase - $300
Service Connection (Required) - $60

Inside wiring/modem installation - $80

IOW ... they're giving me the modem for free if I sign up for a year.
