Steven,

Since it is on religion, a delicate subject, I have often wondered
how many so called established "Christians" whould have embraced
Jesus Christ in: his time, his state and with his message..

Everything is relative, and a lot of people who seem to embrace Christianity now, are pretty well established, pretty well dressed and most IMPORTANTLY, espouse a message that is not disruptive to the
status quo, nothing new for the times, as I think Jesus had for his time..

I don't know... I'm just the wondering...the Coug..

Steve,
Some of these issues are divisive and create bad feelings instead of bringing any of us closer together. I have noticed that more lately and don't want to contribute to it. I'll post what I think about your question but I expect it will only fuel more bad feelings.

The separation of church and state that Jefferson was talking about was in the context of the fears of the congregation he was writing to. They wrote to him about their fears that the government would sponsor a state religion and compel all to belong. This was the whole problem they were escaping from in Europe and England. Jefferson told them there was a high wall of separation between church and state. "A high wall" in those times meant protection from enemies as towns were often attacked and had to protect themselves. He meant the church was well protected from the state. Jefferson, nor anyone at that time, had any notion of leveling the playing field for all religions or for no religion. They had no ideas of prohibiting the use of public facilities for religious functions. The christian faith was not questioned in those times, it was assumed it was the one true religion. The founding fathers were not trying to protect anyone from christians, they were trying to protect christians from tyrannical governments. Today that has been completely turned around and the christians are now labeled as the tyrants. But it is the active interference by our government today with christianity that would send our founding fathers howling with rage. What has happened today is just what they wanted to avoid. The government has imposed it's will over religion, instead of religion imposing it's will over government. The government by placing any restriction on christianity at all has violated the true intentions of our founding fathers. Regardless of how many out of context quotes can be posted their true intentions were as I have stated here.
