Jim: I'll break it out for you. The Zacks company report for Adaptec to which I have access through Waterhouse was last updated on 7 December. In its "Wall Street Recommendations" section it gives recommendations for nine (9) brokers plus the "Z Indicator" (Zacks). The brokers are not identified but categorized as "National Retail Broker" (3), "Institutional Broker" (1) and "Reg Broker" (5). The recommendations are:

-- 2 strong buys (NRB, RB)
-- 4 moderate buys (NRB-1, RB-3) (PLUS Zacks = 5)
-- 3 holds (NRB, IB, RB)

Total: 10 recommendations

In another section, it is more specific but with only 8 analysts noted: Pershing--buy (12/07), Paine Webber--buy (11/25), BancBoston--buy (10/23), Friedman Billings--buy (10/22), Sound View--hold (10/23), "Major Broker"--outperform (10/26), Bear Stearns--Neutral (10/23), and Morgan Keegan--market perform (10/23). Except for the first two, these are not very current and mostly stated at the time of the 2Q earnings report.

The earnings estimate section lists estimates for six (6) unidentified analysts: for this quarter a mean EPS of 0.13 (high 0.16, low 0.08); for next quarter a mean EPS of 0.19 (high 0.21, low 0.17).

Pershing may be the additional brokerage analyst that signed on, given the date of its recommendation. But I don't know that as a fact.
